FlipSide guide 8/21/14: Yorkfest, Gettysburg Brew Fest, Sweet Corn Festival

Fairs and festivals:
The Maryland State Fair kicks off 10 a.m. Friday at the Timonium Fairgrounds, 2200 York Road, Timonium, Md. 38 Special will perform at 7 p.m. [$8 for adults, $6 for seniors 62 and older, $3 for children 11 and younger and free for children 5 and younger]
– Cannon fire will signal the beginning of the inaugural Gettysburg Brew Fest 4:30 p.m. Aug. 23 at Lutheran Theological Seminary, 61 Seminary Ridge, Gettysburg. It runs until 8 p.m and will feature 35 breweries. [Event is sold out]
– The Yorkfest Fine Arts Festival will be held 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday along the Heritage Rail Trail and in the Colonial Courthouse Complex in downtown York. Read a lineup of events and check out the Pennsylvania Cigar Box Guitar Festival along West Market Street.
– Enjoy fresh sweet corn on the cob, chicken corn soup and more during the Sweet Corn Festival 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Newberrytown Peddlers Market, 700 York Road, Newberry Township. [Free]

On stage:
– Experience the classic music and story live during the “Dirty Dancing” Broadway tour 7:30 tonight and Friday at The Pullo Center, 1031 Edgecomb Ave., Spring Garden Township. [$30, $45 and $60]
“Here Comes Mister Hershey,” a musical based on the life Milton S. Hershey, will hit the stage for one night 7:30 p.m. Friday at Hershey Area Playhouse, 830 Cherry Drive, Hershey. [$10]
– Head to a stringed instrument shindig. The York County Fiddlers’ Convention runs 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday outside Felton. It will include country, bluegrass and dancing. [$10]
– Andy Vaughan & The Driveline will perform 8 p.m. Saturday at The Burning Bridge Tavern, 108 Hellam St., Wrightsville. Read an interview with Vaughan.
– Hear experimental folk musician Jacob Augustine, who hails from Maine, Saturday at The Depot, 360 W. Cottage Place, York. Sympathy & The Lion and Macy K are also on the bill.
– Catch “Hairspray” through Sept. 20 at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre, 510 Centerville Road, Lancaster. The musical is based on a curvy Baltimore girl growing up in 1962. Dates and times vary. [$17 to $55]

More events:
– Don’t miss the largest Corvette event in the world 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. today through Saturday and 7 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Carlisle Fairgrounds, 1000 Bryn Mawr Road, Carlisle. The annual Corvettes at Carlisle event features more than 5,000 Corvettes from various decades. [Daily admission is $10 to $15]
– Dover is celebrating the 250th anniversary of its founding and the 150th anniversary of its incorporation with festivities 7 a.m. to dusk Saturday. There will be a pancake breakfast, parade down Canal Street as well as concerts, vendors and activities in Ketterman Park.
– Stop by York makerspace, Working Class, 9 a.m. to noon Saturday for a volunteer work party. Help clean out the upper level, which will house a wood shop and graphics shop.
The Baby Stroller Derby is a fun walk where dads and moms can stroll with their babies. Registration starts at 9 a.m. at Santander Stadium, 5 Brooks Robinson Way, York. The walk is 10 to 11 a.m. A celebration will follow with face painting, ice cream and prizes. [Registration is $15 to $20]
– York boutique Sweet Melissa’s Dream will host an enchanted evening to mark its 15th anniversary 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday. Enjoy fashion, cocktails and music at 38 N. Beaver St. [$15]
– Join Kirk Dreier from Baltimore County Parks for a hands-on demonstration of flintknapping — the ancient art of making tools from rock — 2:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Nixon County Park, 5922 Nixon Road, Springfield Township.
